Sermon notes apps

Listen to the sermon. Keep the notes.

Search for a sermon notes app and you mostly find app store pages, each describing itself. Here are seven options side by side, from the free recorder already on your iPhone to apps built for church notes. We make NoteCube, one of the seven, so we list where other apps do more.

Quick answer

The best sermon notes app depends on what you want after the service. Sermon Keeper and Bible Note record, transcribe and summarize and also handle Bible verses. Church Notes and Spirit Notes pair typed notes with audio timestamps. Voice Memos is free with built-in transcripts. NoteCube suits long sermons and Korean–English services, with live transcripts and key-point cards.

How it works

  1. Start recording before the sermon

Open the app and start recording when the speaker begins. Put the phone where it can hear the speaker or the sound system, not under a coat or in a bag.

  2. Jot only the verse and one line

Write the Bible references and a few words for each point. With a recording or transcript, you don’t need to catch every sentence.

  3. Review the key points the same day

Read the summary or transcript while it is fresh, fix anything the app got wrong, and add the verses you want to come back to.

  4. Write one thing to apply

End each note with one question or action for the week. That is the part most people want to find again later.

Quick picks

Short version, based on what each app says it does:

  • Bible verses inside your notes: Sermon Keeper, Bible Note, Church Notes or Spirit Notes
  • Full transcript and AI summary of each sermon: Sermon Keeper, Bible Note, Sermon Scribe or NoteCube
  • Free, nothing to install: Voice Memos on iPhone
  • Android: Bible Note or NoteCube
  • Spanish sermons: Sermon Keeper or Voice Memos
  • Korean, English or bilingual services, and hour-plus sermons: NoteCube

Best sermon note taking app for Bible study

If you mostly want verses in your notes, pick an app built for church notes. Sermon Keeper shows the verse when you type a reference like John 3:16 and has seven translations built in that work offline: KJV, NASB 1995, ESV, NKJV, NIV 1984, WEB and Reina-Valera 1909. Spirit Notes and Church Notes also insert verse text from a reference, and Bible Note tags every verse it hears in the recording.

NoteCube and Voice Memos have no Bible tools. They treat a sermon like any other talk, so verses appear only as words in the transcript.

Sermon transcription: which apps write down every word

Church Notes and Spirit Notes keep the audio next to your typed notes, but neither site mentions turning the audio into text. If you want the full words, look at the others.

Voice Memos shows a transcript on iOS 18 or later and iPhone 12 or later, in 10 languages including English, Spanish and Korean, though not in every country or region. Sermon Keeper writes a transcript after recording and says audio goes to its server only to make the transcript and is then deleted. Bible Note and Sermon Scribe also transcribe and summarize, and Sermon Scribe lists a live transcript.

NoteCube writes the transcript live while the sermon goes on, in Korean, English or a mix of both, with speakers and timestamps. Tap any line to hear that moment again. Afterwards it organizes the sermon as a talk: a summary and key-point cards, a quiz when you ask for one, and a PDF report. AI results can be wrong, so check verses and names against the recording.

Long sermons and services

Voice Memos stops recording if another app starts playing audio, so keep videos and music off during a long service.

NoteCube has no recording time limit and keeps recording with the screen off. Transcription runs on your remaining minutes: the first 60 cumulative minutes are free, and Pro includes 300 minutes per UTC month. If the minutes run out, recording continues and only the live transcript pauses. Summaries of transcribed content are free on every plan.

Before you record a sermon

Many churches publish their own recordings, and some have a policy on recording in the service. If you plan to share a recording or transcript beyond your own notes, ask the church first. Recording rules differ by country and, in the US, by state; this page is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free sermon notes app?

Voice Memos on iPhone is free and shows a transcript on iOS 18+ and iPhone 12+. Church Notes is a free download, Bible Note has a free version, and NoteCube’s first 60 cumulative minutes of transcription are free. Most AI transcription and summary features in the other apps need a subscription.

Which sermon notes apps work on Android?

Of the seven here, Bible Note and NoteCube are on Google Play. Sermon Keeper, Sermon Scribe, Church Notes and Spirit Notes list only Apple devices, and Voice Memos is built into iPhone.

Can an app summarize a sermon?

Yes. Sermon Keeper, Bible Note, Sermon Scribe and NoteCube make summaries or key points from the recording. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Writing Tools can also summarize a Voice Memos transcript. Check the summary against the recording before sharing it.

Can I import a sermon I recorded with another app?

In NoteCube, yes: share a Voice Memos recording to NoteCube, or use Import file for an audio or video file. Bible Note also lists uploading audio and importing YouTube links.
